50th Anniversary of the Assassination and Legacy of MLK

Commemorating 50th Anniversary of the Assassination & Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on April 4, 1958

On April 4, we will honor the greatness of a man who believed that all are created equal and deserve to be treated with justice and dignity. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was this man. We will remember his legacy by walking, singing, and teaching what he preached. MLK Unity Group and Chico Peace and Justice Center invite the community to join in commemorating the sad moment 50 years ago when Dr. King was shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.

The event begins at 5:30pm at the Dorothy Johnson Center. We will carry signs and walk the several blocks to MLK Community Park (20th Street Park). The group will gather at the statue of Dr. King where we will listen to a recording of “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, Dr. King’s inspiring last speech, delivered on April 3 in support of the striking Memphis Sanitation Workers. We will enjoy and sing along with the uplifting music of the Celebration Gospel Choir, and consider how to create a world of peace and dignity for all.

#FreeTheCSU

If you are a student attending a California State University, a faculty member on one of the many CSU campuses, or are simply a California resident concerned with funding for education then mark your calendar for April 4. The possibility of a CSU tuition increase in the very near future has sparked the California Faculty Association and Students for Quality Education to hold an event in protest of the tuition increase. On April 4 CSU students, faculty, and community allies will be taking to the streets of Sacramento to demand that Governor Jerry Brown and the legislature fund higher education. You too can join the cause by going to the event’s website, www.FreeTheCSU.org, where you can sign up to attend the event. Please visit the site if you want any further details!

Community Event Spotlight: This Way To Sustainability!

Sustainability is an issue that many members of the Chico community are concerned about. We at the Chico Peace and Justice Center strive to promote sustainable solutions that will help the environment.

If you also have an interest in this issue, come out on March 15th and 16th to the ‘This Way to Sustainability Conference’ on Chico State’s campus. It’s a great opportunity to educate yourself and others on the climate and ways we can work towards achieving a more sustainable society. You can find out more information on the event page!
